Dog park pilot in Lake Country

Dog owners have another seasonal chance to visit two regional parks in the District of Lake Country that normally don’t allow dogs.

Until March 31, dogs are allowed off-leash in Kopje Regional Park, and on-leash on trails within Kaloya Regional Park. Dogs are not allowed on the beach or playground areas of either park. The pilot provides more dog-friendly access options during the slower off-season months and will include opportunities in the early part of 2023 for feedback: an online survey and in-person gatherings with RDCO Parks staff and volunteers.

Visitors will see increased signage about the pilot project regulations, dog-bag dispensers, and waste containers. The Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw requires all Central Okanagan dog owners to pick up and properly dispose of their pet waste.

The projects follow up on a similar trial in the two parks last year between October 1 and March 31 at the request of the District of Lake Country Council.

  • During the period from October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 the RDCO is hosting two pilot projects allowing dogs on-leash at Kaloya Regional Park and dogs off-leash at Kopje Regional Park. The pilot projects are in response to a request from the District of Lake Country Council in 2021.

The RDCO is investigating the possibility of continuing access for dogs in these parks each year over the winter months. The goal is to create areas where dogs can run and play that are easily accessible to surrounding the community during a time when travel is more challenging.

The RDCO recognizes that dog access should be thoughtfully located and designed to reduce potential conflicts inside the parks and with nearby land uses. Filling out this survey will help us collect input during the pilot to determine whether the residents support access for dogs in Kopje and Kaloya Regional Parks.

The survey is open until March 20, 2023. Thanks for providing your thoughts.
