Kalamoir Regional Park is a natural area park with hiking trails and vast ecological diversity located along 1.8 km of Okanagan Lake shoreline. The 27.6 hectare regional park, located in West Kelowna is well used by residents and visitors for activities like hiking, biking, bird watching, swimming and kayaking. In 2021, the Regional District started developing a new 20-year management plan for the park. This will replace the original park management plan developed in 2005.

Purpose:

• To guide the future development, operations and management of Kalamoir Regional Park over the next 20 years.

Management Objectives:

• Meet the future population growth, increase recreational demands and climate change impacts
• Protect and maintain the park’s natural environment, wildlife habitat and ecosystem values
• Ensure connectivity through natural area corridors for wildlife
• Provide a range of outdoor recreation experiences and opportunities for environmental education

Phase 2 - Feedback on proposed concept designs

We’ve completed the proposed concept designs based on the Phase 1 survey results. Primary focus placed on:

• Sunnyside Trail and Water Front Trail improvements
• Lower and midway parking area improvements
• Promote wildlife and habitat conservation
• Update signage such as park boundaries, directional and cultural/environmental information

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the online forum and also those who came out to Kalamoir Regional Park on Sunday for our open house. We had over 100 people stop by to ask questions and share their thoughts in-person! All feedback will be considered with other technical and financial considerations as we develop the park management plan. These design drawings for the trail and parking areas are conceptual and are not detailed engineered designs for construction.

Lower Parking Area Improvements

Proposed improvements will:

• Formalize the gravel parking stalls
• Improve pedestrian and vehicle circulation
• Provide accessible paved parking stalls and loading area
• Provide a safe accessible (paved) access to the beach
• Provide a separated multi-use trail and parking area

Midway Parking Area Improvements

Proposed improvements will:

• Formalize the existing parking by construct a future gravel parking area
• Improve sight lines and safety for trail users and vehicle circulation
• Reduce parking congestion in lower parking area

Sunnyside Trail and Water Front Trail improvements

Proposed improvements will:

• Reduce trail user conflict by widening the trails and provide areas to safely step aside
• Provide a multi-use shared gravel trail (2.4 m wide) for hikers, runners, dog walkers and cyclists
• Facilitate safe passage and protect the natural environment with boardwalks, timber guardrails and retaining walls to prevent erosion
• Reduce impacts to the natural environment by improving existing trails instead of building new trails
• Provide a multi-use, shared trail connection as part of the BC Active Transportation corridor in the Okanagan
